A Spanish nobleman, Belmonte, is looking for his fiance, Konstanze, whohas been kidnapped by pirates and sold into slavery. Her travels toTurkey, hoping for a quick and easy rescue but his progress is hinderedby the Pasha Selini and his bitter sidekick Osmin. Straight from acritically acclaimed tour of the Netherlands with the NationaleReisopera, Tobias, Hoheisel and Imogen Kogge's staging of Seraglio is afresh, clean look at one of Mozart's most extravagant, intricate andemotive scores. Staged by Scottish Opera for the first time since1963, the story is told in a simple setting, allowing the opera'suniversal theme of love, forgiveness and common humanity to shinethrough. Written in the German Singspiel style, much of the action inSeraglio is carried out through speech, leaving Mozart's score free toreflect the passion and violence of the emotions on display.
