A unique concert featuring Claire Debono, one of Europe's finest young sopranos, Scottish classical guitar virtuoso Simon Thacker and special guest pianist Peter Evans.
The programme features music for all combinations of the musicians, including: Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco's Fantasia for guitar and piano, originally written for Spanish legend Andres Segovia and his wife Paquita Madriguera, a former pupil of Granados; songs by Joaquin Rodrigo, Fernando Sor, Mozart and Mátyás Seiber; Liszt's Rigoletto Paraphrase for solo piano; guitar solos by Johann Kaspar Mertz, the greatest guitar virtuoso of Liszt's time; Adina's aria from Donizetti's L'Elisir d'Amore.
Claire Debono recently recorded a CD with EMI which was awarded five stars in BBC Music Magazine and has given acclaimed performances at some of the world's prestigious concert halls including the Lincoln Centre in New York, the Barbican, Theatre de Champs-Elysees, Chatelet, Teatro Filarmonico di Verona and Windsor Castle. She will be appearing at the Edinburgh International Festival next year.
Simon Thacker has earned a reputation as one of Britain's finest guitarists, having recently performed at the Purcell Room in London as a Park Lane Group Award winner and garnered five star reviews on his 2007 solo tour, including concerts for ECAT, Musica Nova and Sound. He is the founder of unique crossover project Camerata Ritmata and has been invited to give a series of recitals in Peru in 2009.
¡Canto vivo! performances include: BBC Radio 3, In Tune; BBC Northern Ireland, Arts Extra; Ambassadorial Concert, Malta's National Theatre; LSO St Luke's, London; Summer Music at Paxton House; St James Piccadilly, London.
Peter Evans is one of Scotland's most respected musicians and is particularly identified with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra with whom he has a thirty year association. He has made over eighty BBC radio broadcasts and performed as soloist with all the major Scottish orchestras.
