SCOTS IN GLASGOW - Gourock Highland Games

Gourock Highland Games was first held over 50 years ago and takes placeon the second Sunday in May. It is one of Scotland’s first HighlandGames of the year and is hosted in Gourock Park – a wonderful locationoffering stunning views across the Clyde to the sea lochs of Argyll andto the Cowal Peninsula.

Originally the Games were managed by avoluntary committee, but for the last 12 years it has become the area’smain annual event, organised by Inverclyde Council.

The Gamesare well established within Pipe Band, Highland Dancing and ScottishHeavy circles. Over 40 bands and 100 dancers competed in 2007, andtraditional events like tossing the caber, throwing the hammer andputting the shot, always attract a big following.

Otherattractions have been introduced, including children’s activities,trade stalls, fair ground and catering to make the games a good day outfor families.

The games start at noon and end at 6.00 pm oncethe prize giving for piping, drumming and dancing has taken place.  Thefinale is a colourful march past of the massed bands.

Gourockis recognised by many as the Clyde’s gateway to Argyll and theHighland. The area’s Highland Games is a fantastic event forInverclyde’s communities and visitor alike.
