Gourock Highland Games was first held over 50 years ago and takes place
on the second Sunday in May. It is one of Scotland’s first Highland
Games of the year and is hosted in Gourock Park – a wonderful location
offering stunning views across the Clyde to the sea lochs of Argyll and
to the Cowal Peninsula.
Originally the Games were managed by a
voluntary committee, but for the last 12 years it has become the area’s
main annual event, organised by Inverclyde Council.
The Games
are well established within Pipe Band, Highland Dancing and Scottish
Heavy circles. Over 40 bands and 100 dancers competed in 2007, and
traditional events like tossing the caber, throwing the hammer and
putting the shot, always attract a big following.
Other
attractions have been introduced, including children’s activities,
trade stalls, fair ground and catering to make the games a good day out
for families.
The games start at noon and end at 6.00 pm once
the prize giving for piping, drumming and dancing has taken place. The
finale is a colourful march past of the massed bands.
Gourock
is recognised by many as the Clyde’s gateway to Argyll and the
Highland. The area’s Highland Games is a fantastic event for
Inverclyde’s communities and visitor alike.
