It’s not often that an event celebrates its 125th birthday but the
picturesque Scottish Borders town of Melrose is gearing up to do just
that from April 10 - 13, 2008 when Melrose RFC will mark the 125th
anniversary of Melrose Sevens.
Seven-a-side rugby was founded in Melrose by local butcher Ned Haig
in 1883 and the Melrose Sevens is widely recognised as the blue riband
of club sevens worldwide. With 24 participating teams, a focus on
increasing the number of overseas teams, and a commitment to
encouraging the playing of seven-a-side rugby within emerging nations,
Melrose Sevens 125 is guaranteed to be a spectacular celebration of a
sport now played on an international stage.
As is tradition, Melrose Sevens 125 will take place on the second
Saturday of April 2008 (12th) and will delight visitors with an
expanded programme that includes new rugby events and social activities
running across the weekend. A veterans' tournament, ladies' tournament
and youth tournament will add to the excitement and the Greenyards will
be extended to include a tented village (Greenyards Village). The
Village will provide access to a wide range of food and drink outlets
as well as retail opportunities and an entertainment marquee hosting an
extensive social programme ensuring that the festivities continue long
into the evenings.
In addition to EventScotland funding, Melrose Sevens 125 is
supported by Scottish Borders Council and Scottish Enterprise Borders.
