If you fancy a mid term break of a Caledonian nature, postpone those thoughts about the Highlands of Scotland, or Edinburgh, don’t worry about the credit crunch, let Scottish culture come to you instead. Kensington will once more become the centre of the Highland Bagpiping universe, albeit briefly, on Saturday the 1st of November when we will see the return of the the London Piping Competition to the Kensington Conference Centre, Kensington Town Hall, Hornton Street, London, W8 7NX. After a successful 2007 competition in Kensington, the Scottish Piping Society of London have decided to return to the Kensington Conference Centre or their 69th annual competition. Over a hundred of the world’s greatest Highland piper’s will be converging from all over the globe to compete for various trophies and prizes, Including the Bratach Gorm, (Gaelic for the Blue Banner), one of the most prestigious prizes in the piping world. This competition is regarded as Wimbledon for pipers. As the dark and dreary month of November begins, the competitors and audience at the Kensington conference centre will be in defiance, as bright tartans and the vibrant tones of many bagpipes fill the halls. The Scottish Piping Society of London was established in 1932 as a charity to promote the Great Highland Bagpipe in the London region. The 69th Annual London Competition begins at 9.00 am on Saturday the 1st of November. All day tickets are £10 for SPSL members, £12.50 for non-members.
