| The Scottish National Portrait Gallery provides a unique visual history of Scotland, told through the portraits of those who shaped it. It explores the lives of great Scots, past and present, who have inspired and changed the world - royals and rebels, poets and philosophers, heroes and villains. The five works on display in the same space represent the five themes of Homecoming Scotland, a Scottish Government initiative inspired by the 250th anniversary of Robert Burns' birth. The themes are Ancestry, The Enlightenment, Whisky, Golf and, of course, Robert Burns. While the Portrait Gallery building is closed for renovation (April 2009 to October 2011) these paintings will be exhibited at various venues around Scotland, including Inverness, Banff, Kilmarnock and Perth.
