Enjoy a series of self guided walks especially devised for Homecoming Scotland 2009 and walk in the footsteps of your ancestors. the walks visit historical settlements where high numbers of people emigrated either because of the Highland Clearances or economic difficulties. In addition to giving clear walking instructions and map, each walk provides a history of the people who lived in the area, who they were, including Clan details, why they left and which areas of the world they moved to. Each walk is available as a free download from Walkhighlands and comes complete with a detailed route description, Ordance Survey map, pronunciation and meaning of the placenames, and waypoints for your GPS. The walks have been chosen to highlight some of the historical events which led to the mass movement of people in recent centuries. That these events occurred in some of the most dramatic and beautiful scenery the Highlands has to offer means you can enjoy the present day while stepping into the past.
