The devolved Government for Scotland is responsible for most of the issues of day-to-day concern to the people of Scotland, including health, education, justice, rural affairs, and transport. It manages an annual budget of more than £30 billion in 2007-2008. The Government was known as the Scottish Executive when it was established in 1999 following the first elections to the Scottish Parliament. The Royal Caledonian Ball Trust was originally formed in 1848 by the Duke of Atholl who started a private fundraising ball for their Scottish friends in London. It is a unique charity as it has three Royal Patrons. Between 700 and 1,000 people attend the event annually on the first Friday in May. This year's proceeds will be for the benefit of war veterans. The charity has three methods of fund raising: 1. 120 patronesses; 2. Proceeds of the Ball; 3. Other - occasional sponsorship by City firms etc. |
The Highland Society of London (HSL) is 240 years old and was founded within fresh memory of the '45 Rebellion by Highland gentlemen resident in London and was incorporated by Act of Parliament on 21 May 1816. The Highland Society of London became a registered charity in 1965, and used to assist wives and families of Highlanders, but with the growth of Governmental assistance, the charitable aspect hasn't been much needed due to SAFA etc. It gets things done outside the society by virtue of its network. |

London Scottish Regiment - Territorial Army The London Scottish Regiment (LSR) was formed in 1859 in response to sabre-rattling overseas. The Regiment moved from Buckingham Gate to its present home in Horseferry Road in 1988 and was originally part of the 51st Highland Volunteers until 1992. Formerly a Regiment, it is no longer part of the Highland Division;it is now part of the London Regiment. It has one Battalion in peacetime, three in wartime and volunteers have seen active service in the Falklands, Bosnia, Basra and Afghanistan. London Scottish Regiment still wear their distinctive kilted uniform and Tam O'Shanter and are proud of their Scottish heritage. |
