The Royal Caledonian Schools Trust (RCST) - The Caley, as it's affectionately known, wa sestablished in 1815 to help educate the sons and daughters of Scots whowere serving, or who had served, in the armed forces, and the childrenof poor Scots in London. Today, almost two hundred years later, the work continues in a way, which, we believe still meets our founders' intentions. The Royal Caledonian Schools Trust helps with educational grants for school clothing, school trips, school fees and help with living expenses for those infurther or higher education. Our founders set no age limit so the Caley can also help with those who need a second educational chance. The Caley also sponsors projects that benefit groupsor qualifying students, and awards scholarships to help those whodecide to use a gap year to help less fortunate communities.

Who We Help
Since the Caley became an educational trust in 1996 we have awarded grantstotalling over ONE MILLION POUNDS to qualifying young Scots and projects. This has made a real difference to the educational prospects of our scholars, and we are always looking for further, suitable, applicants. Here are some examples of those we have helped:

  • > Many children in primary and secondary education have been helped with the cost of school uniforms and school trips.  We do consider school fees but only in exceptional circumstances.  We are currently paying living expenses grants of £120 a month to over thirty scholars in further and higher education. This includes a number of actors, dancers and musicians.
  • > From time to time we have been able to help with the huge costs of travel and training for young athletes.

  • > Occasionally we can help with a educational project whose participants include a number of qualifying young Scots.

  • > We have 10 Scholarships per year of up to £1,000 each for those planning to go on a GAP project which will last six months or longer. We are very proud of our Gap Scholars who have helped or who continue to help communities all over the world.

  • > Music, particularly the pipes, is a high priority for us and we are helping a number of future champion pipers.

Ifyou think we might be able to help you please contact us on 01923215350. John Horsfield, our Chief Executive, and Debbie Blackman, ourAdministrator, are available to assist you. Or, alternatively, email usfor an application form.language="javascript"> email us
But please remember we can only help the children(no age limit) of Scots who have served in the Armed Forces, or thechildren of poor Scots living in the London area.

Can You Help Us?
We are helping many wonderful young people, but can continue to do so only with your help. Below are just a few ways you can help:

  • > By agreeing to pay via your bank a small amount each month. It is surprising how, for example, £2 a month adds up.
  • > By getting your employer to make a donation to us, the Caley. Many firms support charities but will only help those nominated by staff.
  • > Raising money with sponsorship, pub quizzes etc. Again, many employers will match any money raised.
  • > By making a one-off donation
We also need you to introduce the Caley to yourfriends, societies and employers and ask them to do likewise. And ofcourse, please consider the Caley when thinking about your legacies.

We are immensely proud of our Scholars, old and new,and now want to help an even wider group of children and young people. The Caley has always made a real difference to the lives and prospectsof young Scots. Please help us continue this fine tradition.
