There are regular functions which no Gaelic speaker or lover of Gaelic should miss: a Literary Evening addressed by a prominent writer; the annual Tattie and Herring supper; a Burns Supper with a Gaelic slant; ceilidhs with famous singers and talks by famous speakers.

The Gaelic Society of London is also a charity, encourages the learning of Gaelic and encourages piping.

Benevolent Fund

In 1966 the Gaelic Society of London agreed to adopt a proposal made by the late Mary Stewart MBE, that a special fund be established to help elderly people resident inthe Highlands and Islands.

The Gaelic Society of London hosted a "Hebridean Evening" thereby raising £900 tolaunch the Fund and the Highlands and Islands Eventide Homes Fund wasestablished. It was hoped that the Fund would give a personal gift or agift of money to elderly people living alone or resident in an EventideHome. The Fund was successful in carrying out this aim and the manyrecipients were remembered by the Gaels in the South.

For many years the late John Nicolson of Raasay and his wife Cathie worked ceaselessly to promote the Fund and, indeed, raised many hundreds of pounds to ensure its continuity. As well as the distribution ofpersonal gifts the Fund has also been able to give help and support intimes of illness or bereavement.

Asthe years passed and conditions changed, on the 23rd of April 1987 the Gaelic Society of London Council Members agreed that the name of the Fund be changed to: "The Gaelic Society of London Benevolent Fund".

At a Council meeting on 24th September 2001 the Gaelic Society of London voted to honour John Nicolson's work for the Fund. Accordingly it is now called the John Nicolson Benevolent Fund.

TheFund is ongoing and members are asked to notify the administrator of anyother member or friend of the Society who is ill or in need of help.Donations to the Fund are always welcome and receipt will beacknowledged by the administrator.
