Founded in 1777, it is the oldest Gaelic Society inexistence. Thereare regular functions which no Gaelic speaker or lover of Gaelic shouldmiss: a Literary Evening addressed by a prominent writer; the annualTattie and Herring supper; a Burns Supper with a Gaelic slant; ceilidhswith famous singers and talks by famous speakers. TheSociety is also a charity, encourages the learning of Gaelic andencourages piping. Benevolent Fund In1966 the Society agreed to adopt a proposal made by the late Mary StewartMBE, that a special fund be established to help elderly people resident inthe Highlands and Islands. TheSociety hosted a "Hebridean Evening" thereby raising £900 tolaunch the Fund and the Highlands and Islands Eventide Homes Fund wasestablished. It was hoped that the Fund would give a personal gift or agift of money to elderly people living alone or resident in an EventideHome. The Fund was successful in carrying out this aim and the manyrecipients were remembered by the Gaels in the South. Formany years the late John Nicolson of Raasay and his wife Cathie workedceaselessly to promote the Fund and, indeed, raised many hundreds ofpounds to ensure its continuity. As well as the distribution ofpersonal gifts the Fund has also been able to give help and support intimes of illness or bereavement. Asthe years passed and conditions changed, on the 23rd of April 1987 theCouncil Members agreed that the name of the Fund be changed to: "TheGaelic Society of London Benevolent Fund". Ata Council meeting on 24th September 2001 the Society voted to honour JohnNicolson's work for the Fund. Accordingly it is now called the JohnNicolson Benevolent Fund. TheFund is ongoing and members are asked to notify the administrator of anyother member or friend of the Society who is ill or in need of help.Donations to the Fund are always welcome and receipt will beacknowledged by the administrator.
