The Society of Scottish Lawyers in London (SSLL) was established in October 1987 by a Steering Committee chaired by Mr Tom Winsor * (Rail Regulator 1999-2004).

The main aims of the Society are:

(1) to provide an opportunity for social contact between Scottish lawyers in London;

(2) to further the interests of Scottish lawyers in London; and

(3) to afford opportunities for the discussion and consideration of matters of interest to members of the Society.

There are currently 8 members of the Committee of the Society under the Presidency of Graeme Davidson of Maclay Murray and Spens. The Rt. Hon. Lord Mackay of Clashfern was elected as the Honorary President of the Society at the Society’s inaugural meeting and continues to hold this position to date. Currently, the main event organised by the Society is an annual Burns Supper which is held at The Brewery in Chiswell Street, London – a magnificent venue in the heart of the City.

Traditionally, the Burns Supper is held on the Thursday before 25 January. Next year’s Burns Supper is going to be held on 19 January 2006 and the Society is delighted that the 2007 Burns Supper will fall on Burns Night itself.

The Society is keen to hold other events for its members. The most recent event in addition to the Burns Supper was a drinks evening at The Royal Scottish Corporation’s headquarters in Covent Garden. The Royal Scottish Corporation is a charity which helps needy Scots in London suffering hardship or seeking to rebuild or improve their lives.

The Society is always keen to recruit new members to join the ranks. Any member of The Faculty of Advocates or member of The Law Society of Scotland who is resident in greater London or who conducts business in greater London is eligible to become a member.

Subscription fees are currently GBP10 per year and an application form for membership can be requested via the contact details below. One of the benefits of membership is discounted tickets to the Burns Supper! Contact: The Committee of the Society are also keen to welcome fresh ideas and enthusiasm in the running of the Society’s affairs and would be delighted to hear from anyone with an interest in joining.
