A Glasgow Games would leave a lasting legacy for Scotland and the entire Commonwealth, Louise Martin, Chair of the Commonwealth Games Council for Scotland said today.

She was speaking in London at the handover of the Candidate City File (30.9MB)(CCF) to the Commonwealth Games Federation. Titled ‘People, Place and Passion’ the CCF contains detailed plans on all aspects of Glasgow’s Bid – covering areas as diverse as venues, transport, medical services and culture.

The title reflects the context for the Games – a diverse and welcoming population, an amazing city and country and an extraordinary passion for sport and the Games.

The key points of the Bid are:

• A compact Games, 90% of all competition and training venues will be within a 20 minute drive of the Games Village
• The Games will make best use of existing venues in Glasgow – including the three main stadia in the city – Hampden (Track and Field), Ibrox Stadium(Rugby 7s) and Celtic Park (Opening Ceremony)
• An environmentally friendly Games – with significant brownfield sites brought back into constructive use
• New and amended venues will be constructed in such a way as to ensure that they are suitable for the community after the Games.
• For the Games Village - a new community of over 1000 homes will be built on the banks of the Clyde at Dalmarnock – all of which would be available for sale and social housing after the Games
• The creation of a special, targeted Sports Development Fund to help countries with their training and preparation for the Games – potentially including the setting up of holding and training camps right across Scotland

Speaking in London, Louise Martin said:
“Our Candidate City File represents our vision for the Games in 2014. A vision of an athlete-centred Games with everything geared towards helping every athlete achieve the extraordinary. A vision of a city and a country leaving a legacy of sport and opportunity throughout the Commonwealth for generations to come.
“The document (30.9MB) is over 600 pages long – but three words best sum up the Glasgow story. People, place and passion.
“The people of Scotland and the people of the Commonwealth will be united in sport and in celebration. Glasgow and its world class venues will be the ideal environment for records to be broken and personal bests shattered. The roar of our passionate Scottish crowd will take care of that. This is the context in which we want all athletes to have the performance of their lives.”
