Diageo, the world’s leading premium drinks company and one of Scotland’s largest employers, has become the sixth Major Supporter of Glasgow’s Bid.

Diageo, the world’s leading premium drinks company and one of Scotland’s largest employers, has today (7th May) become the sixth Major Supporter of Glasgow’s Bid for the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

As a Major Supporter, Diageo now enjoys exclusive access to the Bid brand – which the company can use to promote the Bid to its customers and staff throughout Scotland. The company currently employs over 4000 staff in Scotland.

The announcement comes two days before Glasgow submits its Candidate City File to the Commonwealth Games Federation in London.

Speaking today, Glasgow 2014 Bid Director Derek Casey said:

“As we enter the final strait in the race for the 2014 Games, I am absolutely delighted that one of the largest companies in the world has thrown its considerable weight behind Scotland’s Bid.

“Winning the Games would be an incredible result for our city and our country. This week we submit our final plans to the Games Federation. They will show that we are going to put on a show that the whole world will want to watch, one that will help athletes have the performance of their lives.

“Diageo are the latest big name to join the team. Thousands of Scots, companies and organisations have Backed the Bid. Working together we can win these Games for Scotland.”

Bryan Donaghey, Managing Director for Diageo Scotland commented,

“Diageo is delighted to support the Commonwealth Games bid – not just in financial terms, but also through the huge enthusiasm and encouragement of our 4,000 employees across Scotland. This is an exciting time and along with the whole country, we believe that Glasgow is extremely well placed to win the bid.

“The Commonwealth Games gives Glasgow and Scotland a platform to showcase our sporting talent, our high standards of achievement, and our genuine spirit of hospitality.”
