Popular afternoon DJ Suzie McGuire of Clyde 1 and Craig Hardie, one of Scotland’s top ranking table tennis players, backed Scotland’s bid today by bringing the Glasgow 2014 message to the City’s taxi drivers. Craig Hardie, one of Scotland’s top ranking table tennis players and DJ Suzie McGuire of Clyde 1 backed Scotland’s bid today. Local cabbies Jack Moran and Jim Stevenson joined in an unusual game of doubles across the bonnets of their branded taxis to kick-off a breakfast briefing in the People’s Palace, where Glasgow 2014 representatives provided an update on the City’s bid to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Two fully liveried vehicles, branded by Clyde Taxi Advertising, have been taking the message to the people of Glasgow. From today all taxi drivers in Glasgow will help drive the bid message home to local people and visitors to the City throughout the summer. All drivers with Glasgow Taxis Ltd will prominently display bespoke window stickers carrying the Back Scotland Bid message, and have a range of Glasgow 2014 branded merchandise to distribute to customers, including flags and pens. Jack Moran of Glasgow Taxis Ltd said; "The people of Glasgow like to talk ‐ about the weather, football and the big projects going on in the city. As we get closer to Decision Day on the 9th November, the prospect of winning the Commonwealth Games for Glasgow is sure to be a hot topic of conversation. It was great to hear a little more detail on our bid, I’ll be able to point out things as I drive round the city and answer a few of the questions and queries that are bound to come up". When asked her thoughts on Glasgow 2014 Suzie McGuire added; "I can’t think of a friendlier, more passionate city than Glasgow for hosting the Commonwealth Games. It would be great for my girls, for my city and for my country. Radio Clyde and I give the bid our full support and I urge you to do the same." Speaking at the event Lynne McPhee, deputy bid director, said; "As Glasgow 2014 banners, posters and billboards go up around the city people will be even more aware of the bid. By giving the drivers some information and merchandise to display we hope any resident of the city who hasn’t done so already will add their voice to the 1.75 million Scots who’ve pledged their support on our website. "But the drivers will play another vital role. This summer we will welcome voters from the 71 nations who will ultimately decide the host city for the 2014 Games. As they travel around Glasgow they will ask local people what they think of the bid ‐ by going through our plans with the drivers we hope they will help get the Glasgow 2014 message out there. We want people to know that winning the Games would be a social, economic and sporting dream for Scotland." Craig Hardie expressed his support for a Glasgow Games; "It is a privilege to travel overseas to compete for your country, but nothing would compare with the opportunity of competing for a medal for Scotland in Scotland. I was inspired to take my table tennis to a higher level after travelling to the World Championships in Paris in 2003. With seven years to an event of this magnitude, taking place in their backyard, I can think of no better way to inspire other children across Scotland to participate in sport".
