If it's happening in Scotland in 2007, it's happening in Glasgow! August is a piper’s paradise, with not one, but two bagpiping extravaganzas.
August is a piper’s paradise, with not one, but two bagpiping extravaganzas. Piping Live! 2007
will build last year’s huge success, as the city’s streets and stages
skirl to the sound of Scotland’s national instrument, and top
international pipers perform alongside home grown talent. With the
famous Pipe Idol competition, free festival highlights at each day and
an Edinburgh Military Tattoo taster, this celebration of Celtic music
is not to be missed.
Pipes
and drums from almost every continent descend onto Glasgow Green for
the World Pipe Band Championships. 'The Worlds' are a showcase for the
best of Scottish music, culture and dance. Over 200 bands and 8000
pipers and drummers from Europe, Australia, America and New Zealand
will unite in a crescendo of chords and colour.
September
heralds the patter of thousands of feet, with the Fresh N Lo Great
Scottish Run. The race takes in some of Glasgow’s most famous
attractions, including the popular run over the Kingston Bridge.
Participants will once again get to choose between the half marathon or
10K races, and, new for 2007, the 3 K Fresh N Lo Junior Great Scottish
Run will take place a day earlier.
For
the less energetic, why not cheer on the valiant pedal pushers, as
hundreds of elite cyclists push towards the finish of the Tour of
Britain, the UK’s premier cycling road race. Whereas in previous years,
all roads have led to London, this September, Glasgow has the honour of
hosting the closing stages of the race.
An
unforgettable evening of music is on offer at BBC Proms in the Park, as
Last Night of the Proms is celebrated - Scottish style. As well as
stirring performances from the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, an
international line-up of stars will present an uplifting programme,
ending the Proms on a high note.
Can’t get you out of my head
– well, you won’t be able to, after seeing the fantastic Kylie
Exhibition at Kelvingrove. Fresh from London’s V &A, the exhibition explores Kylie Minogue as a popular icon. Featuring over 200
accessories, videos, awards and costumes – yes, including those gold hotpants – this peek inside Kylie’s wardrobe is irresistible.
