Fighting the Eastern invasion.Any one in a labour intensive business, be they a large or smallcompany, finds it hard nowadays to compete, price wise, against Easternmanufacturers. As, not only are the labour cost in the ‘Tiger’economies, as well as in the old ‘Warsaw Pact’ nations well belowWestern rates, but also the price of materials are so much cheaper.

My company, Sculptured Crafts, which is basically, one would describe as a cottage industry, is in the front line fighting this invasion. We could, like many companies have done, give up the fight and outsource our whole operation, production and painting to the Far East. It would certainly save the company a lot of money, not to mention, making the company much more profitable. But I believe a company also has a social responsibility.

If we move production out of Britain, what of our many suppliers, who, in the main, are small companies employing less than 10 people? What of the talented artisans, we employ? There is more to running a business than just profit, that is why we are proud to say:All production, including original sculpting and painting is carried out in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.www.sculpturedcrafts.co.uk
