century glass and steel apartments springing up along the banks of the
River Clyde, Glasgow is a city that has constantly reinvented itself.
The former second city of the empire was built tobacco, sugar and cotton. The homes
of these trading barons can still be seen in the city centre, and the
Gallery of Modern Art (pictured below) is housed in one.
Glasgow,
particularly the West End, has some of Britain’s most stunning
Victorian architecture, and the art nouveau masterpieces of Charles
Rennie Mackintosh have iconic status.
Glasgow
has one of the richest collections in Europe. With more than 20 free
museums and galleries, the city has a treasure chest of art works from
the likes of Degas, Rodin, Blake and Dali. The finest examples are in
the Burrell Collection, Pollok House, and Kelvingrove, which re-opens
in the summer following a £27.9 million revamp.
