From its medieval cathedral to the 21stcentury glass and steel apartments springing up along the banks of theRiver Clyde, Glasgow is a city that has constantly reinvented itself.

The former second city of the empire was built tobacco, sugar and cotton.  The homesof these trading barons can still be seen in the city centre, and theGallery of Modern Art (pictured below) is housed in one.

Glasgow, particularly the West End, has some of Britain’s most stunningVictorian architecture, and the art nouveau masterpieces of CharlesRennie Mackintosh have iconic status.

Glasgowhas one of the richest collections in Europe.  With more than 20 freemuseums and galleries, the city has a treasure chest of art works fromthe likes of Degas, Rodin, Blake and Dali. The finest examples are inthe Burrell Collection, Pollok House, and Kelvingrove, which re-opensin the summer following a £27.9 million revamp.
