GLOBAL: Scots call to copyright Scottish Kilts
Written by Scots In London
Saturday, 01 March 2008
Scotland has asked the European Commission to grant special copyright protection to Scottish Kilts - kilts made in Scotland. Scotland has asked the European Commission to grant special copyright protection - protected destination of origin status - to the traditional Scottish Kilt in the same way it has given to Champagne from France, Parmesan Cheese from Italy and Feta Cheese from Greece.

The result would mean that only kilts made in Scotland could be called kilts, protecting the rights over Scotland's world-famous highlandwear national dress. At present, it is believed that existing protection is "out of kilter" with similar protections granted to our European neighbours allowed to protect their destination specific specialities.

Leading edge Edinburgh-based kilt-maker Howie Nicholsby of 21st Century Kilts said Scotland's campaign was designed to put an end to the makers of cheap, imported garments calling them Scottish kilts.

"This campaign has come about through years of frustration," Howie was quoted by The Independent newspaper as saying:

"I grew tired of seeing poor quality kilts selling in shops on the high street for GBP20 and calling themselves Scottish kilts. They look terrible – it's like someone wearing a dishcloth. People should feel pride in wearing a real Scottish kilt, but people are being put off kilts completely because the cheap ones look so bad."

Megluna Kuneva, European Commissioner for Consumer Protection, is considering the kilt case.

SCOTSIN and Scots and Kilted Scotsman around the world say..."Come on Megluna - that would be just braw".

Protect Scottish Kilts vs imit

Really pleased that something may finally happen to protect Scottish kilts and
accessories from pale imitations made abroad.
