The students and staff of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (RSAMD) would like to draw your attention to the current crisis which this culturally vital institution has found itself in. Due to an anomaly in how drama students are funded, the RSAMD has encountered a major funding shortfall. Put simply, the funding received from the Scottish Government (via the Scottish Funding Council) is no longer able to meet cost of running the institution.

At present, the RSAMD receives far less funding for drama students (£7000) than it does for music students (£12000). This is the case even though the cost of training a drama student is equal to that of a music student. The funding of drama students in Scotland is also far less than that in England or the rest of Europe for that matter.

The RSAMD has now found itself with a projected funding shortfall of £600000 for the year 2008/09. This shortfall will continue year on year. At present, the RSAMD is looking to cut costs where possible - which in reality means redundancies. The RSAMD is about to lose the cream of its staff.

Pressure is now being put on the Scottish Government and the Scottish Funding Council in order to address the anomaly in the funding of drama students. In order to increase this pressure, we have decided to contact you. A Facebook group has been set up which we hope will demonstrate national and international support for our cause. You assistance is desperately needed - time is of the essence.

The link to the facebook group "SAVE THE RSAMD!" is  http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=11962241771&ref=mf details of the funding crisis is spelt out there in greater detail as are the plans to lobby the Government and the Funding Council.

The RSAMD is the national academy for music and drama in Scotland; there is no other. It is of cultural significance, e.g. it is the only place to offer a degree in Scottish Traditional Music. The quality of what we do is severely under threat.

Please can you inform your membership of the difficulties that we now face and encourage those who are facebook members to join our campaign.
