The Japan Foundation is pleased to invite you to its seminar Nagasaki and Madame Butterfly: Historical Background and Implications of the Famous Opera, the first of its “Movers and Shapers: Japan – UK Relations” series. Was there ever any real connection between Thomas Glover, the Scottish Merchant in Nagasaki, and the opera Madame Butterfly? What are the implications of Thomas Glover’s relationship with Nagasaki and the historical background and implications of Madame Butterfly in the context of their importance as a window on Japan’s changing relationship with Europe? The first in a series on Japan – UK relations, the Japan Foundation presents a seminar entitled “Nagasaki and Madame Butterfly: Historical Background and Implications of the Famous Opera”. Speaking at this seminar will be Professor Brian Burke-Gaffney, Dean of the Human Environment Faculty, Nagasaki Institute of Applied Sciences. His research interests include cross cultural studies and the history of international relations in Nagasaki and he is the author of several books, including Starcrossed: A Biography of Madame Butterfly.
