In October this year I am taking on the challenge of trekking over 100km along the Great Wall of China for charity. As a Scot with a great love of the mountains, to which I try to return to as much as possible, my chosen charity is Mountain Rescue for Scotland.
Mountain Rescue: - includes 28 teams across Scotland who are funded entirely on public donations - is solely run by volunteers who are on call 24hrs 365 days a year - aids any person lost or injured in the hillsis used by the police to help dangerous situations in mountainous areas and inhospitable terrain - is working on projects to improve equipment and aid techniques but needs support in order to manufacture them. I really admire these Mountain Rescue volunteers who risk their lives in order to save others, and I believe it is a very worthy cause to support them and their rescue efforts. My target is £2,500 (of which over 50% is going to the charity, and more if I can achieve it) and I've raised more than half of this amount. I've held events, of which one was an extremely popular Scottish ceilidh night, achieved sponsored walks (in the Highlands of course!) and held raffles. I've also been training hard so that I can achieve my trek along the Great Wall knowing the money I've raised is going to people who do similar hard treks in the mountains all the time.As I'm coming up to the date I leave for China I'm organising my final fundraising event, a professional wine tasting evening held at the V&A Museum of Childhood, Bethnal Green (http://charitywinetasting.eventbrite.com). I'm also looking for sponsorship to help me achieve my final target. I'm writing in the hope that there are some fellow Scots out there who love the mountains as much as I do and feel that they'd like to support Mountain Rescue for Scotland through me and my China challenge. If you would be keen to sponsor me then please contact me at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it . (Unfortunately Mountain Rescue can't afford the registration fess for Just Giving or other useful fundraising pages, so I'm having to organise the funds myself). If you have any suggestions for fundraising sponsorship or questions about my trip or the charity then please do contact me. I look forward to hearing from you. Catherine Bornet
